Can't I just adapt my child's schoolwork with ChatGPT?
Short answer: yes, you can. Take a photo of the worksheet, ask for a simpler version, and something useful comes out. If you already do that and it works, there is no reason to change. The honest story is in what you still have to do yourself afterwards.
What a chat assistant does well
Reading text from a photo, making a hard sentence easier, explaining a sum, typing out a vocabulary list. There is nothing wrong with that, and it is free. If your child gets stuck now and then and you have the calm to sit with them, that is often enough.
What you keep doing yourself
The point is not how clever the AI is, but what is asked of you every evening again:
- Explaining what your child needs. Short pieces, no time pressure, literal language, no story wrapped around the task. You have to supply that every single time, and just as well every time, or the lesson looks different tomorrow.
- Checking that it is right. An AI that explains a sum wrongly does it in exactly the same confident tone as one that gets it right. You are the only check.
- Thinking up what comes next. The same material asked differently, and then in a new situation. That is exactly where tests go wrong, and you have to ask for it yourself.
- Remembering what worked. A new conversation starts empty. What was too much last week is gone.
For one evening that is manageable. Four evenings a week, alongside work and hospital appointments, is another matter.
What you do not get with it
- The same shape, every time. With us every lesson has the same structure and the same headings. That predictability is what brings the calm; a chat gives you a different shape each time.
- A second check before your child sees it. Every lesson goes through a second, independent check plus fixed tests. If there is any doubt it comes to you, not to your child.
- Read-aloud and a calm screen. No clock, no points, no streaks, no movement. It does read aloud, with years pronounced properly.
- A record of how it is going. Which words stick, when it becomes too much, and whether the next lesson should be shorter.
- Certainty about the photo. A photo in a chat service stays in your conversation history, and whether it is used to improve the model depends on your settings and your plan. With us the photo is processed in memory and destroyed straight afterwards. We keep it nowhere, and our data may not be used to train AI.
When a chat assistant is enough
Is it a one-off, does your child not need a fixed shape, and can you sit with them? Then it is fine and this is not for you. The difference starts to count when it comes back every week, when your child runs on predictability, and when you no longer want to be the teacher every evening.
How we do this
You take a photo of the worksheet, or paste the text that is already there digitally. We adapt the shape to your child's condition with eight fixed adjustments, check the lesson before your child sees it, read it aloud, and keep track of how it is going. It is a learning aid, not treatment, and it does not replace support from school. Have a look at an example lesson or read how adapting schoolwork works.
